Individual Child Report

The Individual Child Report for LENA Grow shows the child's language environment experience for each LENA Day he or she participates in.

The cumulative daily graph provides a visual representation of change over time.

1. Adult Words
Indy Rep AWs

Average Hourly Adult Words shows the average number of adult words spoken per hour to or near the child for each LENA Day the child has participated in. The report shows all this child's LENA Days, including past days completed in other rooms or even in previous sequences.

Average hourly AW = Total AW / Total duration * 3600

  • The dark line and lighter band behind the bars provide a comparison to LENA’s normative sample.
    • The dark line represents the average hourly adult word count in a home environment, which does not change with age (2 months - 48 months).
    • The lighter band shows the average in preschool/child care settings.
    • Reference bands are not displayed after the child passes 48 months of age, as LENA's norms top out at 48 months.
  • Hover over any bar to see the numeric value.
  • The hourly average on the left does not perfectly match the average of the hourly bars on the right because the first and/or last hour is typically a partial hour.

Hourly Adult Words shows the number of adult words the child experienced in each hour of the selected LENA Day.

  • Any hour with data is displayed, though the 4 PM hour.
  • The bars for partial hours represent the exact counts, not prorated values.
  • Hover over any bar to see the numeric value.
  • Report opens to the current day. Click any daily bar, or use the black arrow under the daily graph, to see hourly details for the other days.
  • The Y-axis scale of the graph automatically adjusts to fit the highest hour. When clicking through multiple days, take into account these changes - the heights of the bars alone can be deceiving!
2. Conversational Turns

Average Hourly Conversational Turns shows the average number of conversational turns per hour the child experienced on each LENA Day. The report shows all this child's LENA Days, including past days completed in other rooms or even in previous sequences.

Average hourly CT = Total CT / Total duration * 3600

  • The dark line and lighter band behind the bars provide a comparison to LENA’s normative sample.
    • The dark line represents the average hourly conversational turns in a home environment for a child in the same age range.
    • The lighter band shows the average in preschool/child care settings.
    • Reference bands are not displayed after the child passes 48 months of age, as LENA's norms top out at 48 months.
  • Hover over any bar to see the numeric value.
