Managing LENA Grow participants: When to complete, drop, or move a child

This article explains how to choose the right status for a child in some common situations.

For how to edit a participant's status, see here.

Enrollment status options - what do they mean?

Enrolled

Every new participant starts out as "enrolled." A child remains enrolled while actively participating in LENA Grow.

A completed or dropped child's status can be changed back to enrolled if the child later becomes part of another active LENA Grow group.

Active participation means:

  • the child is part of a classroom that is scheduled to start recording soon, or
  • the child is in a classroom that is currently working through LENA Grow sessions

Completed

When a classroom has met or exceeded the recommendations* for recordings and coaching sessions, the children who contributed data are considered "completed."

Marking the children as completed is part of the LENA Grow group closeout procedure.

*Please refer to the LENA Grow Implementation Guide or Coach Binder for more information on the recording and coaching sequence.

Dropped

When an enrolled child is unable to finish out a classroom's recording sequence and is not moving to another active LENA classroom, the child should be "dropped."

Example reasons for dropping a child:

  • child leaves the center part-way through a classroom's recording sequence
  • child moves to a classroom that is not participating in LENA Grow
  • child refuses to wear the LENA clothing despite consistent efforts
  • family withdraws consent to participate

What if a child moves to another active LENA classroom?

When a child moves to a different active LENA Grow classroom, move the child in LENA Online, too!

  • The child's existing recording data will stay with the original classroom (on the Room Summary and Room Detail reports).
  • New recordings will be associated with the new classroom reports and may become eligible for inclusion in the Progress Report.
  • The Individual Report for this child will still display all of the child's data for a continuous view of this child's language environment experience at your center.
